about

Based in Zurich, Victoria Moza (Mozalevskaya) is an established jazz saxophonist, composer, and bandleader. Known for her expressive sound and versatility, she performs with a range of projects, including her own Victoria Mozalevskaya Trio feat. Dimitri Howald, a formation celebrated for its dynamic and emotionally rich performances.
She also leads Frame.Out, a concept-driven project that blends storytelling and socially reflective themes with modern jazz aesthetics.
In 2024, Victoria founded the Zurich Jazz Kollektiv as part of her Carte Blanche residency at the renowned Moods Jazz Club. The collective brings together some of the city’s most exciting voices in contemporary jazz to explore new directions and collaborations.
Born in Kazakhstan, she first had the opportunity to learn to play an instrument at the age of 7. Using a self-painted keyboard, she took her first piano lessons from a school friend. After moving to the Russian region of Altai two years later, Victoria received her first piano and singing lessons at a music school. At 13, she began her clarinet lessons, but after just one year, she gave up playing the saxophone. During this classical training at the Altai College of Culture, Victoria became so fascinated by jazz that she transferred to the music college in Novosibirsk in 2005, which was the only institution in Siberia to offer a jazz program. She soon founded the "Jazz City Band," which is very active in the local scene. In 2008, Victoria embarked on a journey into the wider world: After an intensive, three-week jazz internship as part of the "Open World" program in California (USA) under the direction of Bob Mintzer, she began her studies with Andy Scherrer at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern in the fall of 2008. From then on, Victoria gained a foothold in Switzerland, playing at several festivals, both with her own bands and as a sidewoman in various projects. In 2012, she realized her greatest dream and spent a full year living in New York City, where she was inspired by the relentless pulse of the jazz metropolis and gained unique experiences that have since influenced her music and projects. Returning to Switzerland, Victoria completed her Master's degree in Music Performance at the Jazz Department of the University of Berne (HKB) in 2014.

frame.out
A musician. A woman. A foreigner. A 36-year-old. And that's just the surface. Throughout my life, I've repeatedly found myself in one kind of frame or another. And so it is for many. FRAME:OUT is a musical storytelling that transcends my path. COMING SOON!

Victoria Mozalevskaya Trio
Victoria , Thomas, and Pius first played together at the Langnau Jazz Nights in 2013. Afterward, the decision was quickly made that a trio project needed to be launched that would also appeal to a larger audience. The trio's goal is to combine high complexity with catchy melodies and driving grooves. Their repertoire consists primarily of original compositions and arrangements by the band members.

projects as a sidewomen

pius baschnagel. new beginnings
Emerging from the oppressive Corona lethargy, awakening from hibernation and, of course, this new collaboration.
The up-and-coming German trumpeter Lisa Buchholz, whom Baschnagel met at Bujazzo, and the young Russian saxophonist Victoria Mozalevskaya, in whose trio he plays, form the brilliant frontline of this collective, specially assembled for this evening.
The whole thing is driven by a newly assembled, bubbling rhythm section featuring the brilliant François Lana, the internationally active Raffaele Bossard, and the mastermind behind it all, Pius Baschnagel, on drums. The combination is something to be excited about.
Quintet sound in its purest form and original compositions that convey emotions of departure, awakening, confidence and hope.

Christoph Grabs. Root Area
The core of ROOT AREA consists of Grab, Hammond specialist Marcel Thomi, and drummer Elmar Frey – they have been a successful trio for several years. Now they're taking the next step: with a repertoire consisting of original compositions (8 by Grab, 1 by Frey) and with exquisite saxophonist Nicole Johänntgen and Victoria Mozalevskaya. Thanks to the trio's exemplary rapport and the quick grasp and impressive improvisational spontaneity of Johänntgen and Mozalevskaya, ROOT AREA's debut album was recorded in just one day.

sonja indin. and then she wrote
In her current project, Sonja Indin focuses on female poets and interprets their poetry with jazzy sounds. "And then she wrote" is based on the standard of George Shearing. Sonja Indin's project creates songs that center around the thematic core of the role of mother, in the tension between societal expectations. The way Sonja Indin translates feminine attributes and stereotypes into music is surprising... perhaps this is what feminist-inspired jazz sounds like?
